Vegan Chicago Meetup at The Morton Arboretum

Morton Arboretum (map)

Selected By: Debra

Greetings awesome Vegan Chicago members!

For the month of September, we're gonna venture beyond the Chicago city limits and squeeze in one more outdoor event at another venue we've not yet explored... The Morton Arboretum!

http://www.mortonarb....

The Morton Arboretum, established in 1922 and encompassing 1,700 acres, consists of 500 acres of plant collections and gardens, 900 acres of woodlands, prairies, meadows, lakes, and streams, a Children's Garden, Maze Garden, 16 miles of trails, 9 miles of roadways, research facilities, a library, a restaurant/cafe and gift shop. Its mission is to study trees, shrubs, and plants, and encourage the planting and conservation of such. Located in the western suburb of Lisle, the Arboretum is easy to get to and worth the trip. Admission is $11.00 for Adults and $8.00 for Youth (ages 2 - 17).

The meetup will consist of three phases:

1. Lunch at 1:00 p.m. at the Ginkgo Restaurant and Cafe, where available vegan options are:

*Chilled Mango & Chipotle Soup (cup $2.99, bowl $3.99)
*Garden Burger Vegan Black Bean/Chipotle burger and French Fries (still have to confirm the price - should be $5.99 - $6.99)
*Organic Asparagus & Peach Salad w/ Balsamic or Raspberry Vinaigrette Dressing ($7.99)
*Grilled Eggplant Napoleon (vegetable stack of eggplant, portabella mushrooms, peppers, zucchini, and yellow squash served on a bed of cranberry couscous and topped with a sun-dried tomato ragout) ($7.59)

Sizeable indoor and outdoor dining areas are available, and our plan is to eat outside.

2. Hiking (everyone can explore the gardens/trails at their leisure)

3. (Optional) After an agreed-upon time, we'll reconvene at a shelter. Those interested in this are encouraged to bring a small dessert so we can enjoy a dessert buffet with each other before departing the Arboretum.

This meetup is not pre-pay, as is our normal practice. However, we are still asking members to update rsvp's prior to the deadline, as a final head count has been requested by the chef.

Carpooling is encouraged for this event. If you wish to attend the meetup and need a ride, please indicate such in your reply. If you have a vehicle and are able to provide transportation for someone, please post the number of available seats. It will be up to members to make carpooling arrangements with each other, and postings should be updated if rides are no longer needed or if previously available seats have been claimed.

This will be our last summer blowout... hope you can join us for this unique event!

Gill, I inquired about the french fries while making the meetup arrangements and was assured that they're vegan and cooked in vegetable oil. I also inquired about the burger buns, and a special order of vegan buns (I recommended a brand) are being purchased especially for our group.

It turns out that we don't have a camera available today to record the event. If anyone has a digital camera and is willing to bring it, it would be most appreciated! Thanks!

It was really great to have a chance to meet vegans from the suburbs who don't get into the city very often.

It was a great place to spend a beautiful day with amazing people. I met some great people, and also crew closer to others. I didn't try the food there, but heard good things. The dessert potluck was perfect! A nice balance and variety of desserts. A great way to escape and leave behind the worries of life for a few hours.

The gathering was smaller than most of our meetups simply because it was in the suburbs. But it was nice to have a meetup outside the city since several people live in the suburbs. I actually wasn't expecting the food to be good, but it really was. Great desserts from Debra and Laura, too, and yummy watermelon and veggies from Eric.
