Anyone know of a store in the Chicago area that sells vegan fertilizer? Trying to make my life a little less hectic by not having to blend my own from scratch or pay for mail order shipping on something that's heavy.
Thanks! Julia |

Do you allow manure?

No, I'm trying to be strictly veganic, no animal products. Esp those that come from factory farming.

I've been trying out mushroom compost. It's what's left over when they grow mushrooms, so I guess it may have been poop at one time, but now it is mushroom poop. It is about $2 at menards. Is that still too animal-y?

This website has excellent ideas for natural compost using leaves, veggie peels, garden waste, etc...
http://greenliving.su... If you want something to use right away, I think tofu factories can give you tons of the waste from soy beans - and cheap. I personally know Trans' Tofu at 2733 W. Lawrence, Chicago, they might help you. Soy bean waste is supposed to be a very good fertilizer. |

You might want to look into Cotton Burr Compost. Supposed to be less salty than mushroom compost and able to reclaim clay soil. They sell it at Gesthemane (sp?)
Smells rank just like manure but much better consistency. |

What about worm compost? It's supposed to be really rich. I started a worm bin because 80% of my trash was vegetable/fruit scraps. Of course worms are involved, but I do not have a means of having an outdoor composting bin.
