I recently glanced through a Gaiam sales catalog and discovered that they sell silk products so I wrote to them. Let me know what you guys think of their response. My gut feeling is that animal products should not sold for money regardless of whether or not someone says that the worms were or were not hurt in the process. But am I being over the top?

My post to Gaiam:
"Dear Gaiam. I love your products but please consider removing silk from all your products. I'm sure many vegans feel the same way."

Their response:
"Our silk products are from our Fair Trade group AuLac Designs in Vietnam. We contacted them and they confirmed yesterday that the only silk that is used is the non-violent type (harvested after the worm has left the cocoon) and no silk worms are killed in this process."

I have heard of this. Sometimes it is called Ahimsa silk. It supposedly looks different because the strands have been cut by the escaping moth. I hear many places gather the coccoons from the wild. If they are gathered from captive moths there could be exploitation, I suppose.

It is something that is pretty avoidable, so I don't feel the Need for a special exception in my ethos to use this silk. I'd rather have the mulberries.

But I don't think Gaiam should not be allowed to sell ahimsa silk. I'm sure not all vegans are as critical, and not all customers are vegan.
